Early Years Foundation Stage

In Acorns the children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Staff plan learning experiences and activities that are playful and cross curricular.  The classrooms are resourced with provision areas (e.g. sand, water, roleplay) which the children access independently throughout the day. These areas are regularly enhanced in response to current curriculum themes and to children's interests. The children also access outdoor play sessions everyday - whatever the weather!

In EYFS, there are seven areas of learning:

  • communication and language.
  • physical development.
  • personal, social and emotional development.
  • literacy.
  • mathematics.
  • understanding the world.
  • expressive arts and design

A statutory reception baseline assessment (RBA) was introduced in autumn 2020. This assessment  will be used as a baseline for measuring the progress primary schools make with their pupils.

We carry out the assessment within the first 6 weeks of children starting school. It will be an activity-based assessment of pupils’ starting point in:

  • communication and language.
  • literacy.
  • mathematics.

The RBA is a short, interactive and practical assessment of your child’s early
literacy, communication, language and mathematics skills when they begin
school, using materials that most children of your child’s age will be familiar with.
It is statutory for all schools from September 2021.

Information for Parents: Reception Baseline Assessment

In Foundation, staff assess children's learning and development against age related expectations in the seven areas of learning throughout EYFS.  Observations of children's independent application of knowledge and skills are the basis for these assessments.
